Promising Queensland apprentice joins Sydney stable

Up-and-coming Queensland apprentice Michael Murphy has joined the Anthony and Edward Cummings stable at Randwick on a short-term loan.

Murphy, who is currently indentured to Chris Munce at Eagle Farm, has ridden more than 80 winners in his first two years as an apprentice.

The Cairns-born 20-year-old had a promising rodeo riding career ahead of him after several junior titles but decided to make the switch to horse racing after his first taste of track work at the age of 13.

Sydney can be an unforgiving arena for young jockeys but Murphy is determined to make the most of his stay and has already bagged a winner from two rides after steering the Mack Griffiths-trained Most Exalted to victory at Kembla Grange earlier this month.

Murphy has a 3kg allowance in metropolitan races and 1.5kg at provincial level.

His manager is Greg Burke, who can be contacted on 0407 708 003.
