Tom Walter’s top three to follow from Rosehill July 15
A fair and good (4) surface at Rosehill on Saturday made for some exciting racing and a few handy performances from a future perspective.
This Kris Lees-trained galloper was a victim of a slow early tempo. Not even a last 600m of 33.36 seconds was enough to snare a placing in the fillies and mares benchmark 84 1350m event, finishing fifth. The winner, Insensata, was brilliant in victory but her final 600m was only 0.25 seconds quicker so it might pay to follow Wahng Wah next time out, especially given that she was $17 on Saturday. 1400m with the speed on is her go and at a big track like Randwick in three weeks' time don't be surprised to see her in the finish. Career record (16:4-1-1). Race to look for – BM80 1400m Randwick August 5.
Snagged to the tail of the field from a wide draw and although the speed was genuine throughout, she wasn't able to fully let down until the top of the home straight by which point the bird had flown. Still closed strongly to finish sixth at $61. In her only career win, she led from start to finish around the 1550m circuit at Canterbury. Think she can do the same over 1900m back in midweek company based on her latest run. Career record (7:1-1-1). Race to look for – BM67 1900m Canterbury July 26.
Started a $4.60 favourite in benchmark 75 company, and rightly so, after a fourth-place finish in Listed company last preparation. However, things went pear-shaped quickly for this daughter of Denman when blundering at the start. Forced settle at the rear, rider Kerrin McEvoy had no option but to ride for luck. She ran on resolutely into fourth but it was little consolation for her backers. Had she jumped with them, she probably wins. Expect her to set the record straight if she returns to Rosehill at the end of the month. Career record (7:2-0-2). Race to look for – 3YO Fillies BM72 1200m Rosehill July 29.
